No wonder why adapted Q3A players prefer the other weapons over it. Q3A version on the other hand fails in every area. Quake I version was better for senseless spamming though. It has the right speed, splash damage, area of effect in relation to player movement. Quake 2 RL is the ultimate, single-shot RL in any DM FPS. It is a nice homage to its Quake 1 ancestor (minus underwater kamikazes). Granted, it beats the Plasma Gun by a long shot. Q3A Lightning Gun is nice, but it eats up ammo way too quickly to be a reliable option. The Q3A Plasma Gun is a complete insult to its Doom predecessor. If opponent is adapt at bunny hopping forget it. It is not bad against opponents that do not know how to bunny hop. The shotgun is probably similarly underrated, as it deals 110 damage per shot (11 per pellet, 10 pellets per shot), making it the most powerful weapon in the game, per shot, at close range. I suppose if you primarily play outside of organized play, the PG might be useless, but in highly skilled hands, it’s a monster of a weapon due to the knockback and 20 damage per shot. It’s fantastic fun, but hard to just pick up and play due to the learning curve. All of that (and much more) is fixed with CPM (Challenge Promode) gameplay, but it never really caught on with the mainstream hardcore community (much less the mainstream community). There is significant debate in the hardcore community over OSP vs CPMA, as there were many netcode enhancements in CPMA that make things “different” and have pushed the shaft into the spotlight as the overpowered weapon of the game, replacing the railgun. In Q3 the knockback and splash are a bit on the weak side, making it the 3rd or 4th choice of players in fights. I couldn’t stand the Q2 RL because it was so slow, but other than that it was pretty good.

The RL is a compromise between the 2 previous RLs. But, the railgun, due to the linear movement (not bunnyhopping, but strafejumping), map design (which is where Q2 was a bit better), and warmup/cooldown make it a dominant weapon. Not sure how to respond, as I’m particularly fond of the LG (I won many prizes in tournaments with it as my weapon of choice), and I use the PG about as much as the RL in CTF, which is about all I’ve played since 2002.
